Warhammer Quest : Catacombs of Terror

 Hello guys!

Coming back to fantasy stuff, I bought (without my knowledge) the Warhammer Quest, Catacombs of Terror (1995), along the main game a few years ago... One of the luckiest ebay purchases of my life :)

So I have original floor tiles, cards etc, but not the book . I printed a modified copy of the book translated into Spanish by fans, and I also had most of the metal miniatures of this game, like the necromancer Gunther Laranscheld, which was painted this week.

I also was in the desperate need of evil minions, like several skeletons, and had none of them, I studied the alternative brands out there, and chose plastic skeletons by Wargames Atlantic. I am quite happy with the quality of these undead minis, they definitely do the job for my games.

Their aesthetic is ancient greek, but I did not use the more bronze age or greek stuff, and used just the bows and the spears with GW shields and GW decals on them.

The painting was ultra simple; I bought the "new"  or new for me, Citadel Contrast paints, and I am happy with the result. I am a traditional painter, who likes triads, and several highlight layers in my miniatures, but for some excepcional cases, like this, I can go for Speedpainting.

After priming in white the miniatures, I splashed on the Contrast color, then when the paint dried, just did some drybrush runs with bone and white colors and "Voilá" skeletons painted !

Yet another classic 80' Chaos Warrrior

 Hello guys,

I painted this Chaos warrior of Nurgle in December, but with the Christmas holydays and a trip and other real life stuff, I did`nt manage to update the blog until now, late January 2024...

What to expect from this blog in the near future ?

Well, I am painting now some III c. Romans and I have played several games of Warhammer Quest, so some miniatures of fantasy will come here in the near future, some Sassanids too, and of course, my beloved XVII century stuff like 30 Years War and 1670-90' miniatures for sure.

Coming back to our Chaos warrior, It is a 1980' miniature by Citadel , of course.

I used Vallejo paints, Goblin Green with ivory in a lot of consecutive highlights in a "Foundry triad" style painting. 

As I don't play Chaos, this miniature, along the previous post's Chaos Warriors, is for Warhammer Quest games.

Oldhammer Chaos Warriors for Warhammer Quest

 Hi again guys,

I have just finished a couple of veeeery old Chaos Warriors from the eighties, I want them as enemies of the adventurers in Warhammer Quest. I will paint at least a couple more warriors , amongst them, the famous "Slambo" with his two axes... Here you have a catalog  with the miniatures, sadly I paid  more than the 1,95 pounds for 3 miniatures !

I am really having much fun playing Warhammer Quest lately and I desperately need more (painted) enemies to fighy with, and a random event card with 1D3 of 3Chaos Warriors will decide the game at certain points, or they can appear at the main room of the dungeon, protecting a Chaos wizard or something like that.

I am new to painting Chaos warriors and this kind of armor, I like more the result of the black armor using edge highlights of grey over black on the left warrior, but the full metal armor guy on the right wasn`t too bad, I painted him much quicker, also using drybrush with lighter shades of steel and silver paints by Vallejo Model Air. 

I really like the style of the Oldhammer miniatures, I know modern sculpted plastic Chaos warriors are bigger, better sculpted, with a lot of details... but I still love these models, maybe because of nostalgia or becuase they have a special flavour that modern 3d designed miniatures lack.. I don't know, but I will stick to these kind of models for my games, as long as my pocket can hold!

More Warhammer Empire classic halberdiers

As every year, from November to January, I enter somehow in a Fantasy mood and always paint Warhammer related stuff.  During the lasts weeks I have been playing classic Warhammer Quest (1995) with a friend, and next month I will have at last a game of Warhammer Fantasy 5th edition (aka. Herohammer or Middlehammer) with another friend, so I had to expand my Imperial forces.

My Altorf regiment of halberdiers had (until now) just 10 men, including command, so I have to strengthen it until 15 soldiers and later 20.

Here are the last 4 troopers available to recruit.

As you can see, these are classic monopose halberdiers, the first plastic miniatures available for the Empire in the early nineties. 

I painted them with Foundry paints (reds, blues, browns) and Vallejo model color and model air (flesh, blacks and metals) then ultra matt varnish for clothes and flesh, and shinny for the metal parts.  The shields were painted (all 20 shields at once)  a while ago with airbrush and masking tape, then shinny varnish, decal , very old decal!  then more shinny varnish and then matt varnish to seal it.

Warhammer Empire army is still growing: Knights of the White Wolf.

 Hi guys!

Just a quick update,  after some weeks painting ships, I went back to my origins, I am coming back to my good old Warhammer Empire army from 4th-5th edition , made up of old metal models, mostly, from 1992 range. Also painting some Tercios, but that will be shown in future posts.

I bought  some time ago some Knights of the White Wolf, and as I wanted to play with them quickly, I  commissioned them to a freelance painter, after he finished them, I re-touched them,  and re-painted here and there, added the flag, bases, varnished the models (matt in some areas and shiny in the armor of the rider and the horse) and that's it. Of course following the  original painting scheme by the 'eavy metal team back in the day.

Mordheim: second Reiklander Champion

I don't play Mordheim since a year or so, but I want to play a game soon with friends, so my band need to be reinnforced. In tha past few years I have painted a full Reiklander warband, but I managed to get all the classic metal miniatures so I will expand the bande with these new additions.

This one is a Reiklander champion,  a "tank" in the warband, the guy in heavy armour who delivers terrible blows with his double handed weapon!

The miniature is obviously from Citadel  Mordheim range, and was painted in a mixture of Vallejo and Foundry paints.  Buff leather and Scarlet triads are some of my favourite Foundry paints. Metals with Vallejo model air, and white with Vallejo greys and white. The flesh is Vallejo "Panzer Aces" flesh base highlighted with skin or Iraqi sand.  Then gloss varnish (Ammo Mig) in the metal parts and Ultra matt varnish (Green Stuff World) on the flesh and fabrics.

Warhammer Empire: Supreme Patriarch of Wizards, Thyrus Gormann

 Hello guys,

This time I have painted anothe miniature from the good old Warhammer box "Heroes of the Empire", Thyrus Gormann, the Supreme Patriarch of the Colleges of Magic... Well, he was the Supreme Patriarch in the times of 4th and 5th editions, now in the current editions he is the ex Supreme Patriarch, being the current one Balthasar Gelt. In the present day he is Patriarch of the Bright Order

the miniature is a joy to paint, with a lot of detail, sculpted by the Perries (I don't know who of them!) and I followed the painting scheme of the box art and the 'Eavy Metal studio.

My Empire army had only 1 wizard (borrowed from my Warhammer Quest) so I needed a more powerful wizard to counter my friend's Vampire Counts forces, and Thyrus Gormann was a good solution, armed with the bright sword and the the Staff of Volans. So now my army is quite strong in magic power!

I painted him in over 10 days, painting just a few minutes (to half an hour) in every session. The horse was painted with an airbrush, in yellow tones, and then with a little bit of oils as highlights, the horse flesh in Foundry triads (conker brown).

The rider was painted mostly with Vallejo and Foundry paints, following the bright scheme of the Oldhammer and Middlehammer period, in reds and yellows. I tested my skills with an attempt of painting TMM "True Metallic Metal" on the sword, as I usually paint historical miniatures in a quicker way.

Warhammer Empire: Mounted Herald with Battle Standard!

 Hello guys, and Happy New Year!

This is my first post of 2022. This time I bring you a fantasy miniature, the Imperial Herald with Battle Standard. This figure was released in 1992 for Warhammer Empire army, sculpted by Alan Perry.

I was lucky enough to buy the box of "Heroes of the Empire" 3 years ago, at a good price, but I had painted none of the miniatures until now.  

In Christmas I am usually in a "Warhammer" mood, perhaps because, when I was a child, these kind of miniatures were a common Christmas present at home :)  So I grabbed this mounted Herald and started painting him!

I used an airbrush in order to speed up the process of painting the barding of the horse. I also used waterslide decals by Greenstuff World, I highly recommend them, great quality and you get a lot of decals per sheet.  I chose the more " Empire" like designs and applied to the barding of the horse, and also to the rider when it was painted. Of course I first applied a coat of gloss varnish prior to putting the decals into place.

This kind of miniature is a joy to paint: lots of character (It's a Perry!) and a huge amount of details everywhere, so also was time consuming to get it finished.

By the way, the flag was imposible to me to find it on the internet or books/magazines, so I just took a picture with my phone of the miniature in the Army Book of the Empire, and then print it in the appropriate size and Voilà! I had the (literally) original flag on my own version of the Herald with Battle Standard.

another 3D printing post: siege work GABIONS

Hello guys, 

Today I bring you a short post, all of us who paint and play with miniatures from the horse and musket era, or renaissance, need gabions, indeed we will need a lot of gabions!  As I don't like the plastic gabions too much (Renedrea produces them), I have some spare metal gabions from several manufacturers, but the metal ones are a bit pricey in my humble opinion so I had an idea, albeit maybe a controversial one...

I decided to ask a friend for help, a good friend of mine is dentist (and an enthusiast wargamer), and in his own clinic, he has a VERY  expensive dental scanner and several high quality resin 3d printers, so I asked him  If he could scan a gabion for me and then modify the digital archive of the gabion so that we can expand or reduce the size...  and now I have an almost unlimited supply of customized gabions for almost no price (well, just a few cents). 

I also want to say that I am absolutely against fraudulent use of intellectual property, and historical miniature brands are usually small companies that invest large amounts of money in sculptors and material to produce their miniatures, so although the current technology allows us to reproduce miniatures in resin at almost the same quality as the originals, I will always prefer original miniatures in my collection, and in sacred metal!  That said, in some cases I think it is legitimate to use 3d printers and scanners, specifically to make spare copies of your OWN conversions in metal/plastic/green putty,  for your personal use only, or also small elements of scenery such as these gabions. 

 Beyond this boring legal disclaimer, I wanted to share with you my new gabions for small dioramas and pieces of scenery.

Warhammer: Foot Reiksguard finished

Hello mates,

I managed to finish my foot Reiksguard unit for my Warhammer Empire army (or Oldhammer Empire), it is 10 men strong, I had previously show to you in this blog 6 of these guys, but in the last week I finished 3 more, I painted the flag bearer some months ago but did not take any photos of him.

I used the flag provived in the book about painting miniatures in 'eavy metal style, by Mc. Vey.

As you can see, I tried to reproduce here the look of the old school painting of the nineties,  The foot Reiksguard in red and blue clothes, with red and white feathers.

The shields are airbrush painted with a skull transfer overpainted.
